The History of Sidcup Lodge

Sidcup Lodge was formed in 1948, soon after the end of World War 2, the strong links of Freemasonary forged by the adversity of war. Sidcup Lodge was created (sponsored) by members of Sydney Lodge which held its meetings in the Black Horse public house in Sidcup High Street.
Although that pub has long gone we do still meet just across the road and we have stayed true to our roots. Our founders were mainly tradesmen and Inn keepers from Woolwich, Plumstead, Welling, Bexleyhealth and the surrounding areas.
The Black Horse pub is displayed in the background of our crest amd is depicted in its original form as a coaching inn where horses were replaced on the journey to Dover. The coach is copied from a print in the British Museum of an stagecoach journeying from Southwark to Dover.
The crest's foliage consists of hops, hop leaves and vines for which Kent was previously renown. The white horse depicted originates from the sails of Saxon longboats which we used to invade Medway and create the Kingdom of Kent thousands of years ago. Every symbol in Freemasonary has a meaning waitng to be uncovered!
